Chesney Hawkes – Surrender
It would seem that no other website acknowledges that Chesney Hawkes has recorded a cover of the Cheap Trick classic, ‘Surrender‘.
I heard Chesney perform his beautiful, compound-time cover of the song at a gig in Oxford in 2001. When I approached him and mentioned my excitement at hearing him play ‘Surrender’, Chesney expressed surprise that anyone in the audience had recognised the song. He also explained that he had recorded his version of the track for his next album.
In what must have been the most drawn-out release ever, Chesney’s album (Another Fine Mess) was finally released in 2007, and – to my dismay – the Cheap Trick cover was not included.
In this digital age, I’m not used to simply not being able to get hold of a track I like. Normally you just Google the track name and it pops up on YouTube or something similar.
Sadly, when I Google ‘chesney hawkes surrender cover‘, the number one result – and the only to actually mention what I’m looking for – is a news article written by me for Drowned in Sound, the music site I used to write for under the pseudonym Mr Ben.
Will I ever find Chesney Hawkes’ recording of Cheap Trick’s ‘Surrender’?
