Keeping an idiot in suspense
May 27th, 2008 | by Ben Hoare |My previous blog post, dated April 14 2008, finishes: “I like this theory. It ties in with an idea I have been playing with recently. I’ll tell you more about that tomorrow.”
Since then, I’ve written nothing for this website.
It reminded me of an old joke - “How do you keep an idiot in suspense? I’ll tell you tomorrow.”
As you do these days, I Googled “How to keep an idiot in suspense” - try it if you’re interested. As always, Wikipedia was in the top three:
How to keep an idiot busy for hours is a joke which implicates the listener in circular reasoning or action in an attempt to find out how to keep an idiot busy for hours. The implication is that the listener is an idiot. The joke can take many forms, including questions with no possible answer or activities with no apparent conclusion or objective.
I love the dry, humourless way in which this Wikipedia author explains the joke. This always seems to happen when someone tries to explain why something is funny.
My original plan for this post was to discuss the countless blogs out there with only one post - blogs whose authors had such big plans but never got beyond the grand opening.
I had some really interesting things to say about that. Maybe I’ll tell you tomorrow.
